TELL US A STORY

Calling all children aged seven to 13! Write us a short story for the chance to be one of our competition winners

You don’t need to be a child to love Roald Dahl’s fantastic stories or those of latter-day children’s favourite David Walliams… but have you got what it takes to be the next Roald or David or JK Rowling yourself?
Well, we are challenging you to have a go at writing your own story in 500 words. Your story can be about anyone or anything, past, present or future, it can make us laugh, cry or leave us thinking; let your imagination run riot and entertain us!

The only condition is that your story should start with these words:
“Sam was cycling down the hill when all of a sudden…”

It’s then up to you whether Sam is a boy or a girl and what happens next.
Entries will be judged on their plot, use of characters, language and enjoyment.

The competition will be split into two age groups; ages seven to nine years and ages 10-13.

The two winning stories will be published in the January issue of our education supplement and the winners will also receive a book bundle.
Here are the books in our bundle for our winner of the seven-to-nine-years category which are worth checking out:
• Starfell: Willow Moss and the Lost Day; a fantasy by Dominique Valente
• Bad Nana: All the Fun of the Fair; naughty fun by Sophy Henn,
• Books from Ben Fogle’s Mr Dog series

Here are some books for the age 10-13 category:
• How to Rob a Bank, a crime caper by Tom Mitchell
• Bloom, a funny book that celebrates being different by Nicola Skinner
• The Valentines, a rom com by Holly Smale

David Walliams’ latest book – The World’s Worst Teachers – is a delightfully dreadful collection of tales that will make you love your teachers . Meet science teacher Dr Dread who is half man, half monster; the furious Miss Seethe who is on a detention rampage and Mr Phobe, who is terrified of children.

David Walliams has sold more than 30 million books worldwide and has this advice: “When I was a child I devoured every book I could get my hands on. I loved losing myself in colourful and dramatic stories.”
He says Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was his favourite. “Everything about it electrified me.”

So now it’s over to you… Can you follow in his talented footsteps?

• Entries should be submitted online via the form below but we will accept postal entries to Story Competition, Round & About, Windrush Innovation Centre, Howbery Business Park, Wallingford, OX10 8BA.
Entries must be received by Friday, 15th November and the winning stories will then be published in the January edition.
* Usual Round & About competition rules apply.

*As parent/guardian, I give consent for the child’s name and age and winning entry to be published in the January edition of the Round & About education supplement.
